Leandro Burgay
Born in Vercelli in 1941, but from Biella by adoption, he was always a dilettante who achieved surprising results in the “Open” sector with professionals from all over the world.
A two-time World Champion (in Hammamet in 1997 he won the first Open “Transnational” World Championship, i.e. for “open” teams even for players of different nationalities. In 2003 in Monte Carlo he won the 2nd World Championship).
With over 120 trophies, both National and International (among which the famous European tournaments in Monte Carlo, Venice, Milan, Deauville, Cefalu and Biarritz), he won 4 Italian Pairs Championships and 3 Titles in Open Pair Games: 2nd in the World Pairs Championships in Las Palmas in 1974, 2nd in the European Pairs Championships in Sorrento, and 1st in the Italian Pairs Championships in Fiuggi.
In the 1990s he won, paired with Dano de Falco, all three selections organised by the Italian Bridge Federation, both on a team (with Lauria and Versace the first time, and Bocchi and Duboin the second time) and in a pair (for the 12 best Italian pairs selected by the Italian Bridge Federation) against Lauria-Versace and Bocchi-Duboin, who formed the “unbeatable” blue quartet, multiple champion in the 2000s.
The previous 1976 selection was world famous, having ended with Burgay’s complaint to FIGB, with an appeal to the World Bridge Federation which suspended Italy from any international competition for 12 months, due to the lack of clarity of the investigation - regarding a call recorded between Burgay and the Italian player Benito Bianchi - in relation to the outcome of the selection.
Leandro Burgay developed a new declaration method, based on the opening of “1 Strong Diamond”, known worldwide, with the conventions of “Tris Burgay” and “Texas Fourth” on the opening of “1 No Trump”, presented in New York in 1994 by “The Bridge World”.
The World Bridge Federation classifies him as “World Life Master”.
